  • Joe Weider:
Forget the Great Recession, what happened to the Red Sox over the past month has to be the biggest collapse that we’ve seen in a long while, but as a Yankees fan I’m certainly not complaining. Instead, I’m trying to save on a flight to Detroit on Oct. 3 (hopefully to see a sweep) as well as (fingers crossed) flights to Tampa or Arlington and any National League City that wants a piece of the 27-time World Series champs. Since credit cards affiliated with airlines have recently been offering free flights just for signing up and American Airlines serves all of the cities with teams in the playoffs, why not see what their credit card has to offer? It only seems right to take America’s airline to see America’s baseball team dominate after all. As it turns out, Citi offers a number of cards that are affiliated with American Airlines, and this Citi Gold / AAdvantage World MasterCard Credit Card offers the most lucrative initial bonus—30,000 bonus miles. Unfortunately, the fact that cardholders only get these cards after spending $750 in the first fourth months makes it of little immediate benefit to me. But, after checking out a few other cards tied to different airlines, I have learned that these spending requirements are more of the norm than the exception. The Citi Gold AAdvantage MasterCard actually stacks up pretty well against similar cards. Only the Continental Airlines Credit Card and the United MileagePlus cards have the potential to offer more lucrative initial bonuses and though the Citi AAdvantage card has a slightly higher APR, its annual fee is $45 less than those charged by these other cards. So, while I’m not going to apply for this card and you can probably do better if an initial bonus is what you’re after, if you’re an American Airlines frequent flyer, it could be a good addition to your wallet.
