Last week, I decided to see what all of the fuss was about concerning prepaid cards. I started by looking into the GreenDot prepaid card and was very impressed that its minimum monthly deposit and ATM policies allowed it to basically be a free checking account since by all accounts prepaid cards are rising in popularity because consumers are looking to escape the new checking account fees. Unfortunately, I am not as impressed with this Account Now Gold Prepaid Card. For starters, you have to deposit at least $2,500 each month to avoid a monthly fee of nearly ten bucks (in contrast to only $1,000 with GreenDot). Also, while the GreenDot card allows free withdrawals at roughly 18,000 ATMs nationwide, the Account Now gold card levies a $2.50 every time you withdraw money, no matter what ATM you use. If that’s not bad enough, should you want to close your Account Now card and recoup money left over, you’ll have to shell out a $15.95 check fee. There’s nothing worse than getting charged for your own cash, so I’d say to steer clear of the Account Now Gold prepaid card, especially since better options are clearly available.
