Watchin B.J. Raji kill it in the new “discount double check” commercial yesterday made me wonder what the BJ’s Credit Card has to offer. After all, I am a credit card geek and B.J. is obviously a hit on the gridiron and the small screen, so who knows, maybe the initials are just big time. As you can see from checking out the above, the BJ’s Credit Card offers 2 points for every dollar spent at BJ’s wholesale club and 1 point for every dollar spent elsewhere. Every 3,000 points you gather, you get a $30 BJ’s gift card. This means that if you use a BJ’s Card solely at BJ’s locations, it will act as a 2% cash back card. That’s not too bad, but since the BJ’s Credit Card requires good or excellent credit for approval, you can do better. You can also do better than the 0% on balance transfers it offers for the first six months. For example, the Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card from American Express not only offers a $100 cash initial bonus but it also gives you 3% cash back at supermarkets, 2% cash back at gas stations and department stores, and 1% on everything else. You won’t get the 3% cash back rate at warehouse clubs like BJ’s but if you can find prices equivalent to those at Bj’s elsewhere, this card could be pretty useful. A card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred has a $500 initial bonus as well, so it might be a more attractive option for you. If you have a choice of warehouse clubs also, the TrueEarnings Card from Costco and American Express could be more lucrative than the BJ’s Credit Card, as it offers 3% cash back on your first $3,000 spent each year on gas, 2% on restaurants and travel and 1% elsewhere. Finally if you want a 0% rate, opt for one of the Citicards with 0% on both purchases and transfers for 21 months.
