With colleges and universities getting into the swing of Homecoming season, I recently decided to take a look at credit cards that allow you to give back to your alma mater. I, for one, attended Boston College, and use of the Boston College Credit Card apparently “supports the college and academic scholarships for children of BC alumni.” I really wish I knew exactly what this meant (i.e. what percentage of my spending GE Money, the card’s issuer, would donate to the school) but this detail is for some reason nowhere to be found on the card’s application. What is readily available is the fact that Boston College Credit Card cardholders get a 10% discount on merchandise bearing the BC logo that is purchased at the school’s bookstore as well as one point for each dollar charged anywhere, redeemable for school–related merchandise, tickets and memorabilia. You can get anything from a pair of basketball tix for 1,500 points to a golf outing with your favorite Boston College coach and two friends for 25,000 points to the opportunity to fly and stay with the football team on a road trip. I have to admit that stuff sounds pretty cool. Whether or not the Boston College Credit Card is right for you therefore seems to depend on how big a fan you are of BC athletics and how much you charge with your credit card each year. I mean, if you want to donate to the school, a good cash back card would provide more value. But I don’t know of any card on the market that would provide such great access to college events. Perhaps you could get it by being a booster, but that would require donating a ton of money, not simply benefiting from money you were going to spend anyway, as would be the case with the BC credit card.
