Small business owners with good credit or better who are looking for a reliable card to use for business travel within the U.S. may want to consider the American Express Business Green Card. You must also plan to pay most of your purchases in full by the due each billing period for the Amex Business Green Card to be worthwhile. Amex Business Green won’t be much help with financing.
The Business Green Amex Card can be worth it, based solely on rewards and fees. Cardholders earn 2 points per $1 spent on flights and prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com, as well as 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases. New cardholders can also earn 15,000 points for spending $3,000 in the first 3 months of membership. However, Amex Business Green is unlikely to be worth it for most qualified applicants when you consider how attractive the alternatives are right now.
You can learn more below, including how the Business Green Amex compares to the average credit card offer market-wide and the best overall business credit cards.
Amex Business Green Card Review Highlights:
Uninspiring regular rewards. You will earn 1 point per $1 spent on most purchases made with the American Express Business Green Card, save for flights and prepaid hotels booked through Amex, which yields 2 points per $1. Those earning rates translate to just 0.77% and 1.54% cash back. And that’s not so hot, seeing as the average cash rewards card offers 1.17% back while the best rewards cards give you double that.
Below-Average Initial Bonus. Cardholders who spend at least $3,000 within 3 months will earn a bonus of 15,000 points. The bonus is below the market average, seeing as the average card offers 30,381 points or miles.
$95 annual fee. The Amex Business Green Card will cost you more than four times the market average. The best rewards credit cards can justify charging similar annual fees because they offer more than enough rewards value to make up for it. But that can’t be said of the American Express Green Business Card.
2.7% foreign fee. The American Express Business Green Card is far from the best option for small business owners who travel abroad or make purchases through internationally based merchants. Not only will all such purchases be inflated by a 2.7% foreign-transaction fee, but Amex isn’t as widely accepted abroad as Visa and Mastercard.
No financing appeal. The Amex Green Business Card is not a traditional credit card and thus won’t let you carry a balance from month to month in most cases. You will have to pay your monthly balance in full most of the time - unless certain eligible charges qualify for the “Pay Over Time” feature (up to Pay Over Time Limit), which allows you to carry an interest-accruing balance. All charges not added to a Pay Over Time balance must be paid in full each month by the payment due date. But you should only use business plastic for everyday purchases that won’t lead to a balance at the end of the month, anyway. Credit card companies can increase the interest rate on a business credit card’s balance at any time, so it’s best to use a general-consumer 0% credit card for company financing. Doing so won’t increase your personal liability, but it will give you better user protections.
Good personal credit required. You – not your business – need good or excellent credit to qualify for the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express Open. So if you decide to apply, you may want to check your latest credit score for free on WalletHub

The green card for businesses from American Express is a very good card since it provides additional services to the traveller. Although American Express is not accepted everywhere, it is easy to manage and one of its great advantages is that it is easy to replace if it is lost. Additionally, Amex offers some emergency services to the business travellers.

There is nothing like an American Express card. It is a necessity for the image of your business. This is especially true if you are traveling. I have this card through my brothers business. The customer service is top notch. However, be prepared for a high yearly fee and paying in full each month. We had fraudulent activity on my card a few years ago. Removing it was as easy as calling in to customer service. It was removed and we never had to do anything else. I was with Discover and after having $5,000 in fraudulent gasoline charges and months of dealing with having it removed. This issue was not a problem. Amex is always recommended by me.

I've used American Express for almost a decade now and I can honestly say that when you're traveling a lot it's a necessity. It has helped me so many times while I was on the go, or in another city that I can hardly keep track. I also love to use it for shopping online. Overall, it's a luxury and a convenience that I've grown to love over the years. They have great customer support and always make me feel safe using their card. I love it, and I have never had a problem even when I lost my card once. A++!

I've had my American Express Business Credit Card for nearly a year now and I enjoy having it. Whether using it for rental cars, gas, or other business related purchases, it's sort of reassuring to have the green card in my wallet when I need it. I can walk into most businesses with my card and know it'll be accepted, while also building reward points. Another factor I enjoy about this card and AmEx in general is being able to pay the balance online or check my usage via the American Express app. It has truly made my experience enjoyable and easily accessible.

American Express of course is the de facto standard in business credit cards, and you aren’t a real business traveler unless you have one. From its acceptance around the world, to the additional protections and services that American Express offers, this card is the only way to go. No matter where I’ve gone, this little green card in my wallet has given me confidence that I could do whatever I needed to, whether it was rent a car, buy a plane ticket, or take a client out to dinner. Now that American Express has added rewards points, this card is only better, and I will continue to use this card and be happy to have it in my pocket.

Going green is en vogue in the business community these days. Green is the color of money. Getting an idea of what American Express was going for in naming a card the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express OPEN. But does the Green Rewards Card live up to its connotations, that is the question. Well, first of all its important to point out that it is a charge card, which really isn’t a big deal for a reason I’ll touch on in a bit. When it comes to rewards, the American Express Business Green Rewards Card offers 5,000 bonus points after your first purchase, which is nice but not great, as well as 1 point for every dollar you spent, 2 pts for dollars spent through Amex Travel, and up to 10 pts at retailers through Amex’s online mall. As you may know the extra points via Amex’s mall or travel booked through Amex aren’t really a big deal because prices for whatever you buy will likely be much higher than you can find elsewhere. It’s therefore clear that the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express OPEN doesn’t give you enough green to be worth it.
An alternative for ya: The American Express Simply Cash is a good option because it gives you 5% cash back on office supplies and wireless services, 3% cash back on, and 1% cash back on everything else. Your cash back is also automatically added to your statement each month. This card paired with the Citi Simplicity Card (or one of the other personal Citicards offering 0% on purchases and transfers for 21 months) makes for an excellent business credit card strategy. As alluded to earlier, you only need a business card for purchases that you will pay for in full on a monthly basis. Business cards do not have protection under the credit card law that prevents issuers from increasing rates on existing balances without cause. Personal credit cards do not increase your personal liability, so there’s no reason not to adopt this approach. Besides, if you pick the cards I just laid out, things will be exceedingly “simpler” than if you were using the Business Green Rewards Card.
