You ready, because I’m about to take you to charter school. No, not those schools that receive public funding but are exempt from a lot of the rules and regulations that apply to public schools. Instead, I’m talking about evaluating the Charter One MasterCard Credit Card and how it stacks up with the competition. The first thing you need to notice about the Charter One MasterCard is that you need excellent credit to get it. That means we aren’t in elementary school anymore, this is the big leagues. In other words, you should expect a lot from the Charter One Card because it takes a lot to get it, and if the card doesn’t have a lot, you should move on. Well, the Charter One MasterCard Card does not offer rewards, so that’s one test failed. As far as rates, it has a 0% intro APR on balance transfers as well as a 3% balance transfer fee, but that’s where the specialty ends. There’s no low intro rate on purchases and the regular APR is a fairly standard 13.99% - 18.99%. The Charter One MasterCard Credit Card, it seems, needs to repeat a grade. Let’s talk alternatives. If you want a 0% introductory rate, the Citi Simplicity, Diamond Preferred and Platinum Select cards offer 0% on transfers and purchases for 18 months. If you want good ongoing rewards, the Capital One Venture Card and Cash Credit Card as well as the Blue Cash Everyday from American Express are pretty good options. If you want a lucrative initial bonus, I’d go with the Chase Sapphire Preferred. Boom. Charter schooled.
