What's Your Rating?
The card’s rewards structure is pretty straightforward, you get a $50 cash bonus after your first purchase, 5% cash back on rotating spending categories that change on a quarterly basis, and 1% cash back on everything else. This combination has become pretty standard in the current credit landscape, but it isn’t necessarily as good as it seems. It seems that you’ll only get the 5% rate on $1,500 in charges each quarter and you have to sign up anew each quarter to even get that. That means instead of getting convenience and more straightforward rewards (the supposed calling cards of cash back) with the Chase Freedom 9.99% APR offer, you get another quarterly obligation that comes with caveats. If you forget to sign up for the 5% rate, you’ll just have a 1% cash back card which isn’t really competitive. The same type of reasoning can be applied to the card’s APR. Just because it offers a rate AS LOW AS 9.99% doesn’t mean you’ll get that rate. In fact, only the people with the absolute best credit scores will be given it. Your rate could end up being as high as 22.99% and you wont know what your in for at the time of application. If it were me applying, I’d decide whether a low interest rate is really a priority (If you pay your bill in full every month, it isn’t). If it isn’t, instead of wasting time with this Chase Freedom 9.99% APR credit card offer, I’d either get a good all-round rewards card that is inherently hassle free, like the Capital One Cash Credit Card (1.5% on all purchases) or the Venture Card (basically 2% cash back when miles redeemed for travel) or a card with the best rewards on my biggest expenses (preferably without a need to sign up for rotating categories). If a low rate is a priority, then I’d consider my credit standing and either apply for a card like the Chase Freedom Visa with a low best case scenario APR or a card with a lower high end rate.
