There are a ton of rewards credit cards out there and it can be difficult to figure out which will pad your wallet the most. No I’m not talking about a squishy card that’s comfortable to sit on, rather a card that will maximize your free cash. Branding doesn’t provide much of a clue because it seems like every card has “gold” or “platinum” in its name. Instead you gotta take a look at exactly what a card offers and figure out its actual practical effect using past months’ spending. Well, the Citi Dividend Platinum Select Visa Card -- $100 cash back obviously offers a $100 cash back bonus (in return for spending at least $500 in the first three months), but it also offers 5% cash back on purchase categories that change quarterly (which you have to sign up for each quarter) and 1% cash back on everything else. In terms of rates, the Citi Dividend Platinum Card offers 0% on purchases and transfers for 12 months. Might seem pretty darn good, but when you consider that you need excellent credit to get Dividend Platinium Citicard, it’s really not. See, excellent credit can get you hundreds (plural) of dollars in free money or as long as 18 months with 0%. What about both? You shouldn’t try to get an all-around credit card because doing so will likely mean sacrificing all-aound. If a credit card excels in one respect, it usually comes up short in others. If it doesn’t excel in any area, there are obviously better cards to get. So instead of opening the Citi Dividend Platinum Select Visa, either focus on getting the best possible card for your main need (e.g. rewards or low interest) or two cards that together provide the best possible terms attainable. As far as rewards go, if youre looking for a card for ongoing use, you should get one with rewards matching your spending habits. This obviously depends on the individual, but some good cards to start with are the Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred from Amex. If you want a great initial balance, go for the Chase Sapphire Preferred. If you want the longest possible 0% rate, there are three citicards offering it for 18 months. Strategically opening one or a couple of these cards in conjunction will provide more benefit than the Citi Dividend Platinum Select - $100 cash bonus card.
