Sometimes it’s abundantly clear that a rewards credit card is a good deal, other times its far less so. In the case of the Clear Credit Card from American Express it’s easy, and that’s not a good thing for Amex. Though the Clear from American Express Credit Card requires excellent credit for approval, it only offers 1% cash back, allowing you to redeem every 2,500 points you accrue for a $25 American Express shopping card. One percent cash back is not competitive in todays excellent credit credit card market (1% is the industry standard base rewards earning rate, but the best cards supplement it with even more lucrative rewards on certain types of expenses. General-purpose shopping cards/gift cards also tend to have fees and service charges not found on store issued gift cards as well, meaning the rewards you earn with the Clear from American Express Card might not even be as lucrative as you might think. Sure it also offers 0% on new purchases for 12 months, but that’s not so special when you consider that a few other cards offer 0% for as long as 21 months. For those of you looking for a good, simple cash back card, the Capital One Cash Credit Card is a good choice because it offers 1.5% across all purchases. The Cap One Venture Card is also a good option if you like to travel because miles can be redeemed for any travel related purchase at a rate that makes this card basically a 2% cash back card. The Chase Sapphire Preferred is the other recommendation I’d make for the rewards crowd since it offers $500-625 as an initial bonus and has an attractive base rewards structure. For those looking for 0% on either purchases or transfers, check out the 0% Citicards, as there are three that offer 0% for 21 months on both types of transactions. Whichever of these cards you choose, youre bound to be better off than if you got the American Express Clear Credit Card,
