  • Joe Weider:
With the 2012 Presidential race heating up, I decided to take a look at a Presidential credit card, the Continental Airlines Presidential Plus Credit Card. The first thing that stands out about this card is that it costs about as much as a Presidential Suite at a nice hotel, given that it has a $395 annual fee. But do you get Presidential perks with this Continental Credit Card to warrant such high fixed costs? Well, you do get full membership in the Continental Airlines Presidential Club, which allows you and family or you and two friends access to the United Club in airports and the usual free drinks, food and WiFi associated with airport lounges. You also get a $95 bonus after you first use your Continental Airlines Presidential Plus Credit Card, which effectively reduces your annual fee to ONLY $395, as well as 2 miles per $1 spent on Continental Airlines purchases and 1 mile per $1 spent on everything else. Each time you spend $5,000 the card, you also get 1,000 Elite Qualification Miles, which can help you attain or maintain Elite status. If you have Elite status with Continental, opening the Presidential Club Credit Card inflates your already earned Elite Miles by 25%. This might all seem like a lot, but is it really worth $300? I’d be inclined to say no. The highlight of the Continental Airlines Presidential Plus Credit Card is the United longue access, but if you’re going to travel enough to really make the most of lounge access, your miles will probably get you in anyway. And if you don’t travel frequently but like to do so in style, why not just purchase one-time access for $39? Even if you’re a frequent United flyer, I’d still vote no on the Continental Airlines Presidential Plus Credit Card this year because the Continental Airlines One Plus Credit Card provides the same 2 miles/$1 on United purchases as the Presidential Card as well as an attractive initial miles bonus and does not have an annual fee during the first year ($95 each year thereafter). Sure, you only get one checked bag for free with the One Plus card (as opposed to two with the Presidential), but I’m sure the $300 you save can comfortably cover that.
