With gas prices so high, we’re all looking to save, and people are becoming increasingly aware of how helpful gas rewards credit cards like the TrueEarnings Card from Costco and American Express can be. But is the Amex Costco Credit Card the most helpful? That’s something you gotta determine because it requires good or excellent credit for approval, which means if you can get approved for it, you have a good shot at getting approved for pretty much any gas rewards card out there. Here’s a little pro/con list that I hope can help you answer that question. Pros - If you’re already a Costco member, you wont have to pay an annual fee to get the Amex Costco TrueEarnings Card. - 2% cash back at restaurants and on travel is pretty good. But keep in mind that if travel rewards are what you are after, the Capital One Venture Card essentially offers 2% cash back across all purchases. - Costco prices. This is really only a benefit if youre already in the habit of shopping at Costco, but combining good rewards with good prices, leads to much greater savings. Cons - 3% cash back on $3,000 in annual gas spending. You might assume this to be the Costco and American Express TrueEarnings Card’s calling card, but the Pentagon Federal Credit Card offers what amounts to 5% cash back on gas and gives you a $250 initial bonus. All in all, if a couple of other offers change in the future, the Amex Costco Credit Card could be a great choice. For now, though, it’s not and you should focus your attention on other offers.

Not only can you find anything at Costco, you can buy anything with your Costco credit card, and by your Costco Credit Card I mean the TrueEarnings Card from Costco and American Express. This credit card, which doubles as a Costco membership card, isn’t available to just any Costco shopper though. Like the rest of Amex’s business, it’s only for people with excellent credit (about half of the consumers in the U.S.). But if you can manage to get it, this card will provide 3% cash back on your first $3,000 spent on gas annually (1% after that) as well as 2% for travel and dining and 1% on everything else. Plus, you get a 0% purchase APR for six months. The real question is not what the American Express Costco credit card offers though, but rather how it stacks up against the competition. Honestly, this card is only really worth it if you are or want to be a Costco member. You’ll have to pay an annual fee if you aren’t, and there are other cards out there that provide equal, if not better, rewards. Take the BankAmericard Cash Rewards Credit Card, for instance. It offers 3% on gas and 2% on groceries for the first $1,500 you spend in these categories each quarter. There’s even a better Amex card, the Blue Cash Everyday Card. It offers 3% cash back at supermarkets, 2% on gas and 1% on everything else with no spending limits and also has a $100 initial bonus. However, you before you open an American Express credit card, it’s a good idea to make sure your favorite retailers accept Amex because not everyone does (especially true if you travel abroad). If you disagree with this little review that’s ok; current Costco TrueEarnings cardholders obviously seem to like it just fine, judging from the 4.5 out of 5 stars they give it.
