Anyone seen that commercial for the Chase Freedom Card where the spokesman is comparing the rewards one gets with it to those garnered via the “largest cash back card” by rolling around on a cash-covered bed? Well, the Discover More Card bears a striking resemblance to the “largest” card, as it’s 5% cash back on categories that change isn’t as good as it seems, given that it only applies to $300 spent in those categories over three months time. As the commercial points out, such rewards are worth at most $15 and therefore aren’t nearly as lucrative as other cards on the market. Yes, the More Card from Discover also offers 1% cash back on all other purchases and a $150 initial rewards bonus after you spend $1,000 in the first 90 days, but even so opening it would be a waste of good or excellent credit for the simple reason that there are cards out there with both better initial bonuses and more lucrative regular rewards structures. What are these cards that outperform Discover’s More Card, you ask? The Chase Freedom for one not only offers a $200 initial bonus, but it offers 5% cash back on quarterly spending categories up to $1,500 spent. As the commercial points out, the latter is worth up to $75 in rewards per quarter. The Citi Dividend World MasterCard is also better than the Discover More Credit Card, as it offers essentially the same rewards as the Chase Freedom does. You could also throw the Amex Blue Cash Preferred into the mix because even though it only has a $100 initial bonus, it offers 3% cash back at supermarkets, 2% at gas stations and department stores and 1% on everything else with no spending or rewards earning limit. It’s therefore obvious that the Discover More Credit Card isn’t a great option, but hey, it was helpful in serving as a basis for comparison.
