The Discover Open Road Credit Card’s name connotes freedom and hints at gas rewards, but as we all know rewards cards can lock you into certain spending patterns and its often tough to figure out what a given card offers just from its name (there are a lot of peculiar credit card names these days, it seems). As it turns out, the Open Road Credit Card’s branding is pretty spot on. The card provides 2% cash back on your first $250 spent on gas and at restaurants each month. You don’t have to fill up at a certain station or eat at specific restaurants to get it either, so if you decide to go Kerouac on everyone’s a$$ (Step Brother’s reference!), you can earn rewards wherever the road takes you. The Open Road Credit Card also gives you up to 1% cash back across all other purchases and a $150 resteraunt.com gift certificate after your first purchase. This could be used at almost any eatery found off the highway as well as some local options you might find in small towns along the way. You can also choose to redeem your rewards for a statement credit or an electronic transfer into your bank account, so if you run short of funds, there’s no need to worry. The Open Road Card also offers 0% on both new purchases and transfers for 12 months, so as long as your time on the open road is less than a year you won’t have to worry about interest until you get back. Ultimately, the Open Road Credit Card from Discover is a decent choice. You can find more rewarding gas credit card options and if you are planning on doing most of your driving on major “open roads” then a card tied to a particular station chain will almost certainly be more lucrative. And if you really are on the open road a lot, you’re probably going to spend more than $250 a month on gas and dining, so you might just want to opt for a good all-round cash back card, like the Cash Credit Card from Capital One. Those are my two cents, so take em or leave em.
