Anyone with a car could certainly use a way to save on gas, especially now as the prices are rising to record levels. You may or may not know it, but a credit card can be a great means of garnering these savings as certain offers give rebates or cash back rates on gas purchases. One such card is obviously the ExxonMobil Credit Card. Whether or not you should get this card depends on a few different factors, including obviously what it offers, which we’ll start with in this little review. The Exxon Mobil Credit Card gets you $0.15 off each gallon of each gallon of gas you purchase at Exxon Mobil Stations. It also gives you UP TO 2% cash back on all other purchases. What that means is the Exxon Mobil Card gives you 0.5% on annual non-gas purchases up to $999, 1% on purchases above $1,000 up to $5,999, 2% on purchases above $5,999 up to $10,000, and 1% on all purchases above that. Those non-gas cash back rates are ok, but the draw of the Exxon Mobil Credit Card is definitely the gas rebate that it provides. To put it in percentage terms (it’s confusing that credit card companies do not express their rewards in the same manner - doing so makes the bad offers seem better, I suppose), the Exxon Credit Card gives you 4.1% off each gallon of ExxonMobil gas you buy. Now, I said we’d get to the other factors at play in picking the right gas credit card and here we go. First of all, only people who ONLY get their gas at ExxonMobil should get the Exxon Mobil Rewards Card. People who don’t wouldn’t be able to get the value they want from it. Sure, you could switch to getting your gas only at Exxon stations, but unless that’s extremely convenient, such a change probably won’t last. Another factor to consider is what other gas rewards cards offer. If you have a station of choice other than Exxon Mobil, it’s a good idea to check out how it’s co-branded credit card compares to the Exxon Card. People who go to various stations should check out generic gas rewards cards, which are basically cash back cards that offer higher rewards earning rates on gas purchases. Some of the most interesting offers come from the Pentagon Federal Credit Union. They offer 5% off gas purchases anywhere. The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express is also a good deal because in addition to 2% off gas station and department store purchases, it gives you 3% off at supermarkets and 1% everywhere else.
