My husband and I buy a card every month to pay for our video game subscriptions online and have done so without a hitch for a while until this month. (We buy a new one every month to avoid the $5 fee - it's cheaper to just get a new one.) We do the usual - entering the 16 digit number etc, and it fails to go through. Wait a day for the $1 hold to get back on the cards because we only put enough on there to pay for the game. Try again. Still isn't working. I talked to the game company customer support and they said it more

Andrea, sorry for the inconvenience. To use a Green Dot prepaid reloadable card you for subscription based services, you need to have your personalized card, not the temporary card you get at our retailers. Temporary cards are restricted from being used for cash back transactions, international use and any merchant that processes a charge as a recurring payment(even if you are only making a one-time payment, some companies have a merchant code which registers as a recurring payment. This is common with subscription based services). If you had an issue using a personalized card for this transaction, please email Customer.Advocacy@greendot.com with your name, phone number and a brief description of more

Horrible Service, No one to speak to when you have a problem. I had my card over a year I pay all my bills with it. Then the other day they block my card and then closed them because I had to unusual activity on my card. The agreement says you can load up to 2999 per day but can the amount can not go over 2999. Bait and switch they do not let you do that. Green dot sucks don't use walmart moneycard or any prepaid with greendot

This is terrible! A popup came on and said it was a service rep and would help me if I had any questions. I asked a couple of easy questions, one was is there a fee to add money besides the direct deposit? And I wanted to send popmoney, but it has to have a Star or Pulse insignia on the back. Which it doesn't, it's not accepted everywhere like they claim. Every time I typed something, it came right back to me with a generic paragraph. Then said, I do not have all the answers to your questions and please call the 800 number! What? It's an auto type more

Avoid this card at all costs. Terrible customer service (you can't speak with anyone inside the US, they will not transfer you to a supervisor, they can shut your card down at will for "questionable" purchases even when those purchases are from businesses you frequently use and you speak with them stating all is well) Try emailing them to explain anything when they just allow 300 characters!!! The convenience of this card is awesome, the fees are outrageous. It's nice to use for money transfers with Money-Pak and my WEX account, but that's about it. It fees for everything and it's honestly cheaper to go somewhere like a check cashing places than use these cards regularly.

I absolutely love my Green Dot Gold Prepaid Visa Card. I have horrible credit to begin with, so unable to get an actual credit card. My bank that I currently use is nearly 45 miles away from me since I’ve moved, and I have no time to drive all that way just to deposit my check in my account. My employer unfortunately doesn’t offer direct deposit either, so it made it difficult in the beginning seeing as how I pay most of my bills online with a card. With Green Dot I am able to get it refilled with money in the same town I’m in and pay bills in more

I used to love prepaid cards until I got this one, this has to be the worst prepaid card ever!! the worst customer reps ever, they gave me hell to activate it. the only thing good about this card is the direct deposit. they allow you to buy and sell online with this card and validate a new paypal . the atm fees are horrible other than that I wouldn't recommend this card to anyone. the reload fee is three dollars everytime. if you don't have direct deposit you are better off keeping your money in your pocket I give this 3 thumbs down

I use this card because I have awful credit, that I am trying to fix! although it does not have all the perks of a regular card, I am allowed to pay my bills and receive direct deposit on all my checks. That makes it way easier than having to pay a check cashing place to get my money, the ATM fees are somewhat reasonable, and I like plastic better then cash. Green dot has allowed me to be able to use the card as a way to easily make payments!

I love my Greendot card. I've had one since about 2008, and I think it is perfect for paying certain kinds of reoccurring bills online. I am terrible about remembering charges like Netflix, Hulu, small monthly things I set up online and then forget about. Using this to pay for non-essential services makes it so my bank account never overdrafts due to my own forgetfulness. There are also a lot of drugstores that sell the money packs, so it is convenient to use. The money usually shows up instantly, and the website is easy to use. It is also great if you want someone to send you money in the mail.

I have had my Green Dot Prepaid Visa card for three months now. I have found going to WalMart to reload it each month is the least expensive way to add money to the card. The fee for adding money is only about $4.00. I only use this card to pay three different bills each month and it works great. You can also link your bank account to this card to have money transferred that way however, keep in mind most banks take between three to five business days to complete the transfer and the fee for each bank is different. I don't like using credit often, so this is a great alternative. The Green Dot card is very convenient to have. I like how this card allows you to load money from websites like like Paypal and Amazon because it links your personal information to the card. After a few short steps online, I was able to get this card for a low fee and now I can use it as I would any other prepaid debit card. I have read many negative responses about this card which lead me to be skeptical at best about using it. After using it for over a year now, and having no problems, more

I actually haven't had any problems with my GreenDot card. The only problem I have had was getting money back on my card when a refund was concerned. I ended up waiting somewhere around 2 weeks to get my refund. If I didn't have bills to pay with that money, I wouldn't have been to concerned. I have had direct deposit for a long time and the money was always on time. I have had my Greendot card for over 3 years now and I have been pretty satisfied with it. I probably wouldn't switch it up for anything else out there.

They give a balance online that shows there's still money on your card when there isn't. They turn off your card without alerting you, if you call to speak to an agent. This card has been a complete disaster, and the agents give out misinformation on the phone, too.
Do not use this card if you need to count on having money. Huge mistake.

I have $23.00 left on my card but am getting declined everywhere I try to make purchases. When I contact customer service they keep feeding me the same line of BS that there is nothing wrong with the card, and to verify my information and try the purchase again. Basically I am stuck with a card that has funds, but I can't use. It's only $23.00 but it's my $23.00. People do not buy this card! I learned the hard way!

This card has done no wrong for me. I purchased my card the convent 7-11 station down the street, and was using the temporary card within minutes via a super-easy to follow online activation process. When I had a problem activating my real card when it arrived in the mail just a week later (I had accidentally given my birthday wrong during the sign up process!), customer service was easy to get in contact with and quickly handled my issue. I would highly suggest this card to someone who can't qualify for a 'real' credit card, but still want the benefits of being able to use one, without a lot more

I recently got a Green Dot card and I am very happy with it. I purchased it at CVS. I had to pay $5.95 to activate it. Once I registered it with them online, they sent me a permanent card with my name imprinted on it. It is very easy to set up direct deposit or online bank transfers. When I do a transfer, I usually receive my money the next business day. As long as I do at least 30 transactions a month, there are no monthly fees. They will also waive fees if you transfer $1000 a month but I stick with the 30 transactions. I love the more

We have used this card for quite some time and have really enjoyed it. It is easy to use and easy to pay off. We use this card regularly for many purchases because of the Bill Pay option. Even though there are fees associated with this card we feel like they are lower than many other cards out there. The customer support has been great, although we miss being able to talk to a live person right off the bat. Even with its glitches, we highly recommend this card. Visa is very reliable and most generally accepted everywhere you go, so its handy and easy to use.

I got a GreenDot Visa for my husband to purchase items on the internet about a year ago. We like the fact that we can add money when we want, and that you can’t overdraw and incur fees. I have found that GreenDot is accepted almost everywhere, including using it for international purchases. There are a few things that I don’t really like. One, that I can’t transfer funds from a bank account easily. The nearest loading store is 25 miles away. I also think the monthly fee could be a little lower. $5.95 for not loading at least $1000 per month seems a little excessive. We do like GreenDot more

The Visa Greendot card is a good card for a one time use. But I would not recommend it as a full time card. First of all, they charge almost six dollars a month to keep the card active. And if there are no funds, you will have a negative balance. There are plenty of other cards that do not charge a monthly fee, such as BlueBird by American Express. I would only use these to buy gift cards for friends and family. Also, the fees at the ATM and the fee for adding money (usually $4) all together adds up to over $12 worth of fees, and that is more

I use this card as opposed to the fee laden card my employer decided to go with for payroll. The bad thing about this card if you are going to use an ATM anywhere except for a very few special ATMS you are going to be charged quite a bit. Almost 5 bucks a transaction. The good news is these can be avoided simply by choosing cash back from a regular purchase at a cashier that allows cash back. There is also a five dollar monthly fee that is easily avoided by adding 1000.00 a month to the card (easy with direct deposit), or by making 30 transactions in a more

Very easy card to use. I load money on it and use it just like a normal credit or debit card. I use it for everything: buying stuff on the internet, shopping, going out with my friends, you name it. It also gives me peace of mind knowing that the normal fees attached to credit cards are not applicable to this card. Sure, it has its own fees, but they're much less harsh than typical credit card fees. The fees are simple and aren't seemingly unnecessary like other credit cards. They're fair and make a lot of sense. If I had to, I would completely and highly recommend this card more

I have used the Green Dot prepaid card for years. I prefer it to many other prepaid cards because the monthly fee is low. Also you can add a second card as well,, which is very useful! However, they recently starting charging 4.95 to add a second card and don't leave you many ways to pay for it.
I also do not like that it charges you each time you have a transaction. The great thing is, I can withdraw at ATM's for free! All in all, it is one of the best prepaid cards because the fees are low.

I have used this prepaid card a great deal and really enjoy using it. It is convenient and saves me the hassle of keeping up with an actual credit card. It lets me spend what I plan on spending without the temptation of going outside my means. The card is simple to update and add money to. The customer service is also surprisingly helpful should you have any issue. This was something I did not expect given my past experience with other cards, but there is always the chance that I got a particularly nice employee that day, either way I’d give it two big thumbs up.

Poor customer service. I went to the gas station to buy a gas card to give to my daughters boyfriend. The attendant recommended the green dot gold card. I bought it thinking it was just like a regular gift card ($20.00 plus the activation fee of $5.95. When the kid tried to use it the card asked for a pin number. I called to talk to a human being however to no avail. I would tell anyone not to buy this kind of card. It is a major scam and no customer service.....

After reading the FAQs on the company’s site, it seems there are two ways to add money to your Green Dot account without having the actual prepaid card at hand: 1. You can reload your card from your bank account through an ACH transfer. Contact your bank and ask about the steps you have to follow in order to make the transfer. Please note that not all banks offer that option. Also, the bank may charge a fee for this transaction whereas Green Dot does not. You will need the following information: a) Your Green Dot account number. You can go here >> https://www.greendot.com/greendot/login in order to see it. b) more

You can use your personalized Green Dot card to withdraw money from ATMs or a bank teller. There’s no fee for using MoneyPass ATMs. Withdrawing from other ATMs costs $2.5 per withdrawal plus any fee the ATM owner may charge. Making a withdrawal from a bank teller costs $2.50. The bank may charge an extra fee for withdrawals. Also, there’s a daily limit of $400 for ATM withdrawals and $400 (per transaction) for withdrawing cash from a bank teller.
You cannot use a temporary card to make a withdrawal from an ATM or a bank teller.

There are two ways to check your balance and transactions: 1. You can send a text message from your mobile phone but in order to do that you have to know the last four digits of your card’s number. For example, if the last four digits are “5555” in order to check your balance you should send “Bal 5555” to 43411. If you want to check your transaction history send “HIST 5555” to the same phone number. Before using this service you have to register your mobile number by going here >> https://www.greendot.com/greendot/login Green Dot does not charge you for receiving text messages; however your carrier’s rates for sending text more

Where can I use this Green Dot card that doesn't have my name on it?
Jun 17, 2014
Photo of Card H.
Card Hub
The card you are talking about is a temporary card which can be used for all types of purchases, until you have received your personalized prepaid card in the mail. You can add money after Green Dot has verified your identity. However, there are some limitations: you can’t use it to make cash withdrawals (e.g. withdraw money from ATMs) or make purchases from foreign websites and generally merchants who are not in the U.S.

How can I send money to my bank account from my greendot card?
Jun 11, 2014

After reading Green Dot's FAQ it appears to me that there is no way to transfer money from your card to your bank account. Having said that you can withdraw cash at an ATM and you can also use Green Dot's bill pay service to send paper checks to individuals (so it might be possible to even send a check to yourself).

Can you use your greendot Visa to rent a car in the US?
Jun 17, 2014
Photo of Card H.
Card Hub
Yes, you can use your Green Dot card to rent a car. However, rental agencies withhold more money than the actual cost of renting because they want to make sure that any unforeseen expenses (gas, car damage etc.) will be covered. You will not be able to use those funds until the final transaction is posted to your statement. So, it’s better if you call the agency and ask them about their specific policy. Also, for more information you can go here >> http://www.cardhub.com/edu/credit-cards-and-car-rentals/

I don't have enough money to pay the monthly fee which is $5.95. What will happen if I don't pay it and will it affect my credit or anything related to finance in the future ???
Jun 23, 2014

As long as you have the card you will always be charged a monthly fee. If there’s no money on the card or the amount is less than the monthly charge, the account balance will become negative when the monthly fee is assessed. In the case your card has no funds Green Dot will not charge you more than 2 monthly fees. If your balance is negative the company may deduct the amount from any funds you may add in the future to this or any other Green Dot prepaid card you maintain or register. Also, the company may choose to cancel a card with negative balance without notice. Finally, more

As a result the card will match the information that was provided during the application process. Also, you can be added as an authorized user to a Green Dot card by a person over 18.

I just bought my Visa Prepaid card and on the bottom of the packet it says, that it can't be used where a Pin is required(ATMs or Purchases). So what does that mean?
Feb 7, 2014
Photo of Card H.
Card Hub
That means you can't use your card to withdraw money from an ATM or make purchases where you select the "Debit" option at check out. It's most likely because you bought the card at a store and have not officially registered it yet. You should be given a PIN and the ability to make debit transactions once you have done so.

That's interesting because the DISH website (http://www.mydish.com/support/ways-to-pay) states that customers can pay their bill via credit card, debit card, or bank account -- among other payment methods. This card also offers free online bill pay, according to CardHub's 2013 Prepaid Card Report (http://www.cardhub.com/edu/prepaid-cards-report-2013/#GreenDot). I would therefore suggest calling DISH customer support and inquiring about the issue.

While you can purchase a prepaid card at a retail location and use your initially-loaded funds to make in-person purchases, you must register your account with the issuer in order to make purchases online or over the phone. More specifically, you will have to provide Green Dot with your name, address, Social Security Number, and other identifying information and wait for them to send you a card with your name, account number, and the expiration date on it. Those are the three key pieces of information needed to process a prepaid card payment on Amazon.

I've asked this question everywhere with no clear answer. I purchased the green dot cards last year because I planned to purchase a lot of furnishings for my new home online. I've never felt comfortable using my bank issued debit cards online because I don't feel I know enough about computers to be able to protect my personal information from hackers. So, anytime I intend to make online purchases or pay by phone, I always load money onto a pre paid debit or credit card. After my orders had all gone thru and the transactions were completed, the green dot accounts were closed. It has been 6 months and a more

This is a great question, and honestly it’s not one that we have encountered previously. If we were in your shoes we would do a couple of things: 1. Call Green Dot and ask them for assistance. You may have already done so and we'd love to hear what they said if you have. 2. If that doesn’t / didn't solve your problem, you should contact the merchant you purchased your furniture from. Merchants are able to provide a credit on a different card but prefer not to do so because they don't get back the interchange fee that they have already incurred. You could ask the merchant to either more
