I’ve looked at a number of miles credit cards tied to particular airlines, but not everyone is brand specific when it comes to air travel. Those who aren’t can really benefit from a credit card offering generic rewards miles, such as the Miles by Discover Card. This card, which is obviously issued by Discover and is on the Discover network, doesn’t have an annual fee but does offer some interesting rewards, especially in terms of its initial rewards bonus. While most cards with initial bonuses offer them after the first purchase or after you spend a certain amount during the first couple months, the Miles Discover card takes a slightly different approach, giving users 1,000 bonus points each month they make a purchase during the first year of membership. It also gives you 2 miles for each $1 you spend at restaurants and on travel up to $3000 per year as well as 1 mile for each $1 spent on everything else with no spending cap. These miles won’t expire, but you will forfeit them if you close your account, your account is inactive for 18 months or you don’t manage to make a minimum payment for two consecutive months. Discover enables you to redeem these miles for travel on any airline, rental cars, gift cards, cash, even charitable donations. Ultimately though, since you don’t have an affinity for a particular airline, you’re going to get the credit card offering the absolute best rewards. If you’re simply interested in finding a card with the best initial bonus, the Miles by Discover Card is not the best fit, given that it requires monthly spending to garner only 12,000 miles. Compare that to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, which is currently offering 50,000 bonus points to cardholders who spend $3,000 in the first three months and allows you to transfer these points to various airlines’ frequent flyer programs without sacrificing value. You can probably do better than the Discover Miles Card if you want ongoing generic airline rewards as well. The Venture Card from Capital One offers 10,000 initial bonus miles as well as 2 miles/$1 spent on all purchases. This rewards structure is what led Money Magazine to dub the Venture Card as the most rewarding credit card in terms of free flights.
