I forgot about global entry rebate, so if you include $200 airline credit, global entry rebate ($100) + 25k points (valued at about $350), u get more than what you pay for first yr, but I still standby what I said: unless you are a high roller, don't get this card.
Dear Margie and Joe. I have one question. I notice u guys commenting a lot on these cards, an I wonder whether you have used them yourself? I have previously owned this card, when I was doing hardcore travelling. As Margie spelled out nicely, this is a wonderful card to have, if you travel often. Lounge certainly is great, but to be honest, if you are someone who can afford $450 annual fee without flinching, that means you either fly higher class cabin (thus you get lounge anyway), or you are probably high tier member for many airlines, and u get lounges anyway. so why is this card good? BESIDES the pros and cons Margie already listed except: 1) 200 airline credit is flat out awesome. You somehow packed too much, and airline charges you money? No problem. Put it on amex plat, and they give you back. had to make changes due to unforseen circumstances? no problem. amex plat got your back. 2) while Margie put this as cons, their "glorified" customer service - aka concierge service is great. You need anything ANYWHERE around the world? just call the number on the back, (they give you number to call for each country, so you don't have to make international calls for 1800 number), and they can direct you to anywhere, and assist as best as they can. I used its service and found them to be so valuable, and each story will be too long to list. 3) Margie is wrong, in that amex DOES have shopping mall, and having amex plat gives you opportunities to earn 4x, 6x, and sometimes 10x points. 4) if you are a fan of exclusive privledge, and high-end resort and hotels, this card can help you tremendously. So what's the final verdict here? Let's be honest cardhub. This card is geared toward high spenders. The prestige that comes with owning amex plat is significant. Its like people asking why do you drive Benz when your good ol' Scion can get you there just fine? Same thing. This card has that special feeling. You have to ask yourself if you are worth it to get this card at $450 per yr. (no first yr free too! sheesh). why do I say let's be honest cardhub? It's because cardhub gets referral fee for people signing up for credit cards. But there are already other websites that cater toward high spenders/prestige group that either have/or be exposed to this card already. i think the major target group for cardhub is either newcomers or those who need 2nd or 3rd card, and not a charge card that on average annual spending is close to $180,000. Yes , that's the average spending each person makes on their amex plat, who owns this card. So unless you aim to put about 80-100k on this card per yr, its not worth it.
No, Won Buddy Lee, I have not actually used The Platinum Card from American Express, but I don’t think you really have to have used a particular credit card in order to evaluate it. I mean, when I compare credit cards, I like to compare the total value that you can expect from them as well as relative differences. That is why, like Margie Cole said, the Amex Platinum Card’s concierge service isn’t all that special; a lot of cards offer that and basically all it means is that you’ll be able to get a live person on the phone right away who is perhaps a bit better trained than a normal customer service operator. That’s also basically why people looking at this card shouldn’t put too much stock in the lounge access, as you pointed out. So what do you get in exchange for your $450 annual fee? Sure, the $200 in incidental airline coverage is nice, but aside from the fact that you might never get to put this to use, it’s only $200 and you still need $250 to recoup your value. The initial bonus obviously lets you break even, but then what else is left? The Amex Platinum’s ongoing rewards aren’t good, and I would pretty much ignore any extra points attainable by making purchases through Amex’s online shopping mall because the prices there will almost certainly make this transaction a net negative. All in all, the only thing that really sticks out about the Amex Platinum charge card is its annual fee. As you pointed out, the card’s target audience will likely have lounge access already (and many other cards offer it anyway) and its initial bonus and ongoing rewards are attainable with other cards. Just because someone is a high spender doesn’t mean they should waste money, so I’d go with a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred. It doesn’t charge a first year annual fee and it does offer an initial bonus worth $500 on travel. To me at least that seems like a better deal.
@[100002002162180:2048:Joe Weider] see this is what i mean by if you haven't used it, u really don't know. to say the price of amex shopping mall negates any bonus is laughable. they, like your bank, gets commission for connecting you to other websites (so say if you want to go to www.apple.com, all u have to do to get bonus amex points is by going there via amex site, and its not like apple will charge you more for it. so let's get that out of the road. second, as i have mentioned, this is a luxury card. Your argument is invalid because what would be your assessment on Amex black? the one where its invitation only with $4,500 annual fee? I am not disagreeing with you that chase sapphire preferred is better choice for 99% of consumers who visit cardhub. However, i won't put down amex plat, because it has great values. Finally, again, this is where have u used it before? comes in. neither Marge or you have used amex plat concierge service before. So please don't comment on it, or cast aside as its just customer service. In big picture, it is, but there is a reason why Amex has won award back to back to back to back to back. Little things make a huge difference to customers, and is that part of the cost ($450?) maybe. But thats why we pay more for say Benz, first class airline tickets, nicer suits, because the experience it comes with those items make it well worth it. IF... you have the capacity and capability to pay for it and enjoy it. (long statement short, this card is great if you are filthy rich. otherwise, follow joe's advice and go with chase saph).
@[100002002162180:2048:Joe Weider] global entry recoups additional 100. just fyi. but like Joe points out, 200 airline credit, 100 global entry + free airline lounges via Priority Pass Select and frree to US Airways and American Admiral Lounges are really worth if you fly a lot. If not. stay away~~
What kind of credit card is worth a $450 annual fee? In my opinion, probably none, but I guess we will see because that’s what the Platinum Card from American Express charges. Anyway, I don’t believe the Amex Platinum Card is actually made of platinum so that theory is out. That seems like two negatives compared to zero positives, but let’s give the American Express Platinum Charge Card a fair shake. Pros - 25,000 bonus points when you spend $2,000 in the first three months. Since you can get a $250 statement credit with 36,000 points, that sure is a pro. - Airport lounge access is certainly a nice amenity for frequent travelers. - A free companion ticket will also bring a decent amount of value. - $200 in airline credits for incidental charges will also come in handy for frequent travelers. - Getting a points discount when you redeem for travel is pretty good too because you’re going to do so as much as possible. Cons - The ongoing rewards aren’t special. If I'm going to pay $450, I want more than 1-2 miles per $1 spent. - The whole concierge service offered by credit cards is just a glorified customer service and I wouldn’t give it much weight. Overall the Platinum Amex Card gives you a lot but it takes a lot too. You really need to sit down and monetize how much each of the cards “perks” would actually amount to and compare this amount to the annual fee. If they’re worth less or the card doesn’t provide as much value as say the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card ($500-625), then I wouldn’t get it. And I'm guessing that the Amex Platinum Card does not.
You know, people don’t really talk about charge cards that often, but they are actually pretty popular among those with excellent credit scores. The reason for this is that charge cards often have some of the most lucrative, interesting rewards attainable with plastic, and that includes rewards credit cards (the only difference between a charge card and a credit card is that you have to pay your bill in full every month w/ a charge card). American Express is one of the most active major credit card companies on the charge card market, and The Platinum Card is one of the companies premiere charge cards. The first thing that you probably notice about The Platinum Card from American Express is that it has a $450 annual fee. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad card though because banks sometimes charge high annual fees in return for extra rewards, meaning whether or not you get this card depends on if the rewards it offers are worth at least $450 a year to you. In terms of rewards, American Express’s Platinum Charge Card offers enough bonus points after you spend 1k during the first 3 mo. to get a roundtrip domestic flight. It also gives you $200 in Airline Fee credits each year, a free companion ticket with a first class or business class ticket purchased through Amex’s travel services, airport club access, and deals on upgrades at hotels. Then there’s the typical 1 point for every $1 you spend with the Platinum Card from American Express and double points for trips booked online. I’d have to say that this stuff does seem pretty valuable IF you travel very frequently and you like to do so in style. Still, if free flights, airport lounge access and hotel upgrades are what you’re after, there are likely cheaper options out there. The Southwest Airlines Credit Card is currently offering 2 free flights, so that’s at least one offer worth checking out.
