Everytime gas prices rise, interest in gas credit cards does as well. In general you should only get a gas credit card if gas is one of your biggest expenses and a gas card tied to a particular chain if you ONLY get gas at its locations. So if you are either a loyal Shell customer or live in an area that enables you to cast your allegiances with one of many stations, you may be interested in the Shell Credit Card. The Shell Card, which requires good or excellent credit for approval, does not have an annual fee but does offer a 10 cents/gallon credit for the first 100 gallons of Shell gasoline you purchase each month following a month in which you made at least $500 in qualifying purchases. When you spend $1,000-$2,499.99, you get 15 cents/gal. and when you spend over $2,499.99 you get 20 cents off per gallon. The Shell Card obviously does not have the most straightforward rewards program ever devised (and I would not spend more than you would ordinarily in order to get to a higher rewards earning level) but it could be fairly lucrative one, depending on the price of gas and what “qualifying purchases” are. A quick look at the Shell site will tell you that qualifying purchases are those made for personal, family or household reasons, so its only business expenses that don’t count. For the week of 01/09/12, regular gas costs an average of 3.382/gal. nationwide. The 10 cent per gallon rebate would therefore equate to about 3% cash back on 100 gallons of Shell gas. For someone who fills up once a week and puts say 14 gallons of gas in their car each time, the Shell Credit Card would save about $5.60 each month. For comparison sake, the Exxon Credit Card gives you 15 cents per gallon rebates that are not constrained by gallon limits. It also gives you up to 2% cash back on everything else you buy each year. The BP Credit Card also gives you 10% off BP gas for the first 60 days and 5% after that as well as attractive cash back rates on other purchase categories. The Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card offers 3% cash back at supermarkets, 2% at any gas station or grocery store and 1% on everything else. This makes it clear that the Shell Credit Card is competitive but that there are also other more attractive offers out there. If you can easily get your gas from either Exxon or BP, their credit cards would be more lucrative (The Shell Card beats the Exxon Card for heavy spenders though). If you want the freedom to get gas anywhere but still earn rewards on it and other types of purchases then the Blue Cash Card would be better. Ultimately, only people who can only get gas at Shell Stations should get the Shell Credit Card and even they should think about whether a gas oriented cash back card like the Blue Cash would better meet their needs.
