Is the Slate Card from Chase just a gimmick or does it really provide something unique? That’s the first thing that pops into my head when I look at this card, which looks more like a hotel key than a credit card. To answer this initial query, though, I had to take a closer look at the details of what it offers. First of all, the Slate from Chase requires good or excellent credit for approval and does not have an annual fee. That initially tells you that the Slate Card probably doesn’t have the best possible rates or rewards (those usually come with a fee) but that it better have some attractive terms to warrant someone with exemplary credit standing submitting an application. Well, Chase’s Slate Card does not have rewards, so it all comes dwon to its rates. It offers 0% on purchases and transfers for 15 months. Unfortunately, this does not stack up with the competition. The Citi Simplicity, Diamond Preferred, and Platinum Select Cards all offer 0% on purchases and transfers for 21 months and, like the Slate Credit Card from Chase, do not have annual fees. The Discover More Card, like the Slate Card, also offers 0% for 15 months, but it gives you rewards too. Speaking of rewards, if you were checking out the Slate Card simply because you saw it on TV and are interested in getting rewards, a couple of cards to check out are the Venture Card from Capital One and the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.
