Recently, I’ve been talking a lot about rewards credit cards and what they can give ME, YOU, or whoever is using them, and it occurred to me that perhaps I was being selfish or greedy and maybe I should write one of my little reviews on a credit card that allows the user to give back to something other than him or herself. So I searched for charity credit cards and stumbled upon this one, the Humane Society of the United States Credit Card. For every $100 you spend with it, Bank of America will donate 25 cents to the Humane Society, the nation’s largest animal protection organization. Donations are made in $50 increments. This card, which by the way has no annual fee and requires at least good credit for approval, also gives you one point per dollar spent, which can ultimately be redeemed for cash, gift cards, merchandise, etc. While this card’s intentions are good, the bottom line is that if you really want to give back, you can do better than what essentially amounts to a.0025% cash back credit card. Why not just open the Capital One Cash Credit card, which also has no annual fee and requires good credit for approval, but gives you 1.50% cash back across all purchases and a $100 bonus just for spending $500 within three months, which can easily be passed on to the Humane society? You’d simply be sacrificing a ton of value for a little bit less hassle if you opened the Humane Society Credit Card. So stick with a good cash back card, and mail those checks on in yourself.
