Inactivity Fee
Explanation:
This is a fee that you might get charged when you have not used your account for any transactions over an extended period of time (e.g. 90 days).
Inactivity fees are usually charged on a monthly basis (in addition to a standard monthly fee, if applicable) until you make a transaction.
Our Thoughts:
Most consumers need not concern themselves with inactivity fees as they typically use their credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards often enough that such penalties will never be an issue. However, if you know that you're only going to use a given product sparingly prior to applying for it, it's important that you carefully determine whether or not it charges inactivity fees. These fees are typically listed in a product agreement's fine print.
In addition, we often recommend that consumers who are unable to spend within their means simply lock their credit card in a drawer in order to benefit from monthly credit score gains without succumbing to the temptation to make purchases. Before doing so, make sure to verify that your card does not charge inactivity fees.
