Best Rewards Credit Card

Last update: Nov 20, 2014

best credit card deals Credit card rewards differ greatly. They are issued by different companies, are accrued in different forms and can be redeemed in different ways for different things. However, our Editor’s Picks for the Best Rewards Credit Cards (some of which originate from CardHub advertising partners) all have one thing in common: they provide better rewards than the standard programs offering one point/mile per dollar spent or 1% cash back. While, the majority of the best rewards credit cards require excellent credit for approval, it's not a prerequisite and options with less stringent requirements do exist, though they are likely to be limited in both number and associated benefit.

EXPERT’S ANSWERS

How are the best reward credit cards selected?

By: John Kiernan, Personal Finance EditorThe main criterion that our editors used to pick these products is the amount of rewards (i.e. airline miles, points, cash back, etc.) offered. The best rewards credit cards typically set themselves apart from the pack with one or more of the following features: a significant initial rewards bonus, a high points/miles/cash back earning rate on all purchases and/or extra rewards on certain spending categories.

What is the correlation between credit standing and rewards credit cards?

By: Odysseas Papadimitriou, CardHub CEOThe lower your credit score, the fewer the options available to you in terms of rewards credit cards as it is only natural that the best credit card rewards programs be found on the cards with the highest credit lines. In addition, it's actually the norm for credit cards geared toward people who have not yet reached good credit standing (FICO score > 660) not to have rewards, so products that do provide such benefits really stand out. However, as rewards credit cards for people with fair or limited credit typically bring high annual fees with them, you should think carefully and evaluate the overall benefit of such a card before opening it.

How do I know what kind of rewards to get?

By: Sonia GarrisonThe best credit card rewards complement your lifestyle. Therefore, before picking a rewards credit card you must evaluate your spending and pinpoint your main expenses (e.g. travel, gas, groceries). The best reward credit card will be the option that provides the most lucrative savings in these areas. If no one spending category sticks out, the best credit card rewards program will be the one that provides the most cash back on all purchases.

Can I have more than one rewards credit card?

By: Ross GarnerDepending on your credit level and monthly spending, having more than one rewards card might be advisable. According to the Card Hub Island Approach, consumers with excellent credit who spend at least $1,000/month should segment their rewards (i.e. open the best rewards credit card for each of their main spending categories) in order to garner the greatest possible savings. If, for example, your main expenses are gas and airfare, the most lucrative rewards will not come from a single general rewards card but instead from a airline credit card used in concert with a gas rewards credit card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card has proved to be my favorite rewards card. They have a great offer where if you earn 40,000 points by spending $3,000 in your first three months, you get a $400 credit to pay down a statement. This credit is very useful money back, and in my mind, it is more useful than say gas rewards, air miles, or hotel rewards.

I never considered to get a rewards card before I applied for my Capital One Rewards Venture card. It is an amazing card. The interest rate is nothing to complain about, and I am earning double cash back on most of my purchases. The customer service answered all my concerns about it pretty easily!

Years ago I applied started using the Citi Thank You Preferred Card for College Students. It was the first card I ever had to myself and I thought it was great. I liked it because it had a very generous rewards program, that was also very easy to redeem. I also like it because it was very easy to apply and get approved for. I used it until I graduated college. I would highly recommend this reward card for college students.

The best rewards credit card is the Amazon Chase Visa. I love this card because I often shop at Amazon. It gives you 3 times as many points if you use it at the Amazon website. You can directly use these points at Amazon if you want or you can also just get cash back through a check or a deposit into your account. There's also no annual fee so that's definitely a plus for this card.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is the best reward card if you enjoy traveling. The initial bonus is amazing, add on no black out dates and no limits on the miles you could earn and the rewards add up. The card pays for itself with every use.

The best rewards card out there is easily the Discover IT card. 1% cash back on all purchases and 5% cash back on rotating categories. And they usually have pretty good categories, such as gas, restaurants, movie tickets, etc. What's more, you can then use that cash back to purchase gift cards with which you can get additional value for your rewards. For example, you can spend $20 of your cash back and get a $25 gift card to your favorite store. It's an amazing value that everyone should try to take advantage of if you qualify.

In my honest opinion the best rewards card on the market at the moment is actually the US Bank Cash + card. You are able to choose your own categories to earn cash back on. Two categories at 5% one at 2% and everything else at 1%. I like it because you are in control of what you earn your rewards on, plus you can get annual bonus rewards. Not to mention if you have a credit card with US bank you can also get a Gold Checking account package for free. With this package you can enroll in a START savings program to earn up to $100 in visa more

The CapitalOne VentureOne card is great, both for rewards and for what it wants out of you. Even with my relatively-sparse use of the card, I rack up enough miles to fly at least once every other year. The fact that there is no annual fee and it has a decent APR is just icing on the credit cake.

The best rewards credit card for me is the Chase Amazon Visa. I make a large amount of purchases off of Amazon.com, and with this card I am able to get a consistent 3% back on my purchases. There are other cards that offer up to 5% cash back, but it is almost always on rotating categories, and you usually only get 1% back on other purchases. Another nice bonus of this card is that you get 2% cash back on all gas station and restaurant purchases, which are my other 2 biggest expenses!

The best rewards credit card on the market is going to be the one that you use. My honest opinion is that most people who get a rewards card will most likely not use it to its full potential. With that said, I really like the Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card. I find that the terms and rewards are reasonable and competitive with other credit cards on the market. Overall I have been very pleased with this card and find the rewards a benefit too.
