I’m a friend of animals, how about you? If you are, you might be interested in opening the Animal Friends Credit Card, which one would think would be a charity credit card that benefits animal shelters and the like. The truth is though that you should not just get a credit card because it is affiliated with a good cause (just like you shouldn’t get one because it bears your favorite sports team or celebrity’s name) because if it doesn’t offer competitive terms, another credit card could allow you to earn more rewards and be an even better friend to animals or whatever cause your support. The Animal Friends Credit Card from UMB Bank does not have an annual fee and “supports humane rescue, adoption and pet-focused outreach, while helping Animal Friends end pet overpopulation, abuse, and unwarranted euthanasia.” It’s unclear how the Animal Friends Card does this – whether money is donated to the cause based on people opening accounts or on a consistent basis based on spending – and how much gets donated. The Animal Friends Card doesn’t have great rates either, the only intro rate you get is 0% on purchases for six months. Though helping out our furry friends is certainly a great cause, the Animal Friends Credit Card isn’t the card that will further this cause best. If you want to donate, you want to maximize the rewards you earn. The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is great for this purpose since it gives you $500 cash for spending $3,000 on the first three months, which you can, of course, donate yourself. The Capital One Cash Credit Card will help you donate on an ongoing basis, since it gives you 1.5% cash back on every purchase. A card like the Discover More Card offers a different, yet interesting way to give back to your favorite animal charity. Given that it offers 0% on purchases and transfers for 15 months as well as 5% cash back on rotating spending categories and 1% on everything else, you can make purchases and earn rewards for 15 months while only paying the minimum. This will allow you to leave the rest of your would be credit card payments in the bank accruing interest for longer. You can then donate the sum of your cash back and interest at the end of this 15 month period. As a result, any of these cards can serve as a de facto Animal Friends Credit Card and can actually be better Animal Friends Cards than the actual Animal Friends Card.
