The Oportun® Visa® Credit Card is a legit card for people with limited credit history who want to build a solid credit score, as it reports account information to the major credit bureaus each month. But how good the Oportun Card is depends on the annual fee an applicant is assigned from the card’s range of $0 - $49. The amount of the annual fee depends on each applicant’s overall creditworthiness.
Other than the opportunity to build credit, potentially at a low cost, the Oportun Credit Card does not have much to offer. The card has no rewards, and its interest rate is quite high – ranging from 24.9% to 29.9% (V). It does, however, advertise a credit limit that could be as high as $1,000, which could make emergency expenses easier to handle.
For your convenience, we’ll highlight below the most important things to consider when deciding whether or not to apply for the Oportun Credit Card.
Oportun Credit Card Review Highlights
$0 - $49 annual fee
The Oportun Credit Card’s annual fee is $0 - $49, with the exact amount depending on an applicant’s credit history, income, debt and other such factors. For comparison, the best credit cards for people with no credit have $0 annual fees, and the average credit card offer has an annual fee of $22.29.
$300 - $1,000 credit limit
Oportun Card applicants will find out what their exact credit limit is upon being approved for an account, but it will be somewhere between $300 and $1,000. Many credit cards for people with limited credit offer a $300 starting credit limit. But you’ll generally need established credit and a good amount of income to get a $1,000 limit.
High interest rate
The Oportun Credit Card’s interest rate is 24.9% - 29.9% (V), depending on an applicant’s overall creditworthiness and other factors. In any case, the rate will be a lot higher than what the average credit card offer charges (22.89%). In other words, carrying a balance from month to month with the Oportun Card is an expensive proposition.
No rewards
Unlike several credit cards for people with limited credit, the Oportun Card does not reward cardholders for making purchases by giving them points, miles or cash back. This is not a deal-breaker, but if you’re not going to get rewards, it would be better to have a guarantee of no annual fee.
Built for building credit
The Oportun Card is available to people with no credit score, limited credit history, or better. You just can’t have bad credit and expect to get approved. The card can also help users improve their credit score, by reporting account information to the major credit bureaus each month. If that information reflects on-time bill payments and low credit utilization, your credit score should go up over time. You can track your progress on WalletHub with free credit scores and reports.

I had a $1,900 credit availability, and a few months ago I had a financial setback. I maxed out the card for about four consecutive months while I was still making minimum payments. When my tax refund came in, I went and paid it down to where my credit utilization was 25%, or at least that's what I thought I was doing. It turns out they lowered my credit availability to $500, and I am still at the max even with $28 over the limit because they lowered my credit for no apparent reason. This is a company that does not care about its customers. I have been with them for years, for loans and everything, but after seeing this, I will never do business with this company again. I will just pay off my debt and remove them from my life.

This is the only credit card I have, and when it got hacked, not only did they fail to resolve the issue, but they also charged me interest on a purchase from a place I never visited. I had to pay for it all to avoid having my credit ruined. I will never use this card again.

I was approved for this card with a $1,000 credit limit. I was recovering from back surgery, and they closed my account because I had not used the card for three billing periods. While lying in bed, not able to do anything, why would I purchase anything I did not need? I called customer service after receiving a letter in the mail informing me they had already closed my account. If I had been advised prior to all of this, I would have used it to pay for the medicines that I needed. Don't even bother calling them; you get nothing.

Opportun is a horrible credit card company. They canceled my account for having a zero balance for six months. I tell you, the company Oportun? Totally uncivilized! Two thumbs down.

Do you not under any circumstances get this card. It is a scam. I have to mail my payment as soon as I get the bill, although it is not due until the 15th of the month. I have to send payment two- to-three day delivery, tracked, costing me $10. It takes Oppportun Visa at least 10 days to post the payment after receipt! That is even though the tracking shows me that they received the payment a week earlier!
It’s obvious that they are trying to delay payment so they can charge late fees. This card is HORRIBLE! Again, do not get it. It’s junk-a total ripoff.

@Oportun Thank you. I’m going to try again to do this with the 2 to 3 day delivery, and, if it gets posted within a week or so, I’ll be happy, and I’ll somehow get rid of that comment. I went overboard on it, frankly.

I've had this card for a year now with the same $1000 credit limit. Never received a limit increase. 2 other cards I have with major names gives me regular limit increases. Website takes forever to update and had errors for several months. The good part is I've never had issues with payments. I think I'm going to close the card out now that my credit score has built up.

I have had this card for a year without any issues, I pay every account within a few days of receiving my statements, now for the past few months, Oportun shows my payment, posts it, but still says there is a minimum due, and I always pay more than minimum due, I then get charged a late fee, and they want an extra payment. This is now the second month in a row, yet the past year has been fine. I call and email them repeatedly, and never get a response. Now I see I am not the only person having this issue! Rip off! I have my proof that the account gets paid on time, so now I will lodge an official complaint! I would stay away from this company!

This company is ridiculous!!!! I pay my all of my credit cards one full week in advance, at double or greater than the minimum due. THIS COMPANY considers that an "extra payment" and it does not go through as the minimum monthly due.....they literally charged me late fees because I paid my monthly payment early. They told me that if it's not paid ON the due date that it is considered an extra payment and does not go towards it, so I get charged late fee for not doing it on the date due. Now they are making my minimum payment DOUBLE than what it was based on my payment history. This company makes absolutely no sense. Don't bother trying to talk to them either....just makes it worse.
