Is the Cabela's Credit Card Worth It?
The Cabela's Credit Card is worth it for people who shop at Cabela’s or Bass Pro Shops, as it offers 1 - 2 points per $1 spent on purchases and will increase that rate if you spend enough. Spending $10,000 in a year raises your earning rate to 3 points per $1, and if you spend $25,000, you get 5 points per $1. You’ll have to meet an undisclosed creditworthiness requirement to qualify for the higher earning rates, though.
There’s also a small initial bonus of $20 in CLUB points upon approval, $10 after making two Bass Pro Shops or Cabela's purchases, plus another $20 after five purchases made anywhere Mastercard® is accepted within 30 days. In addition, the card gives you access to member-only events and offers, and it has a $0 annual fee.
What You Need to Do to Make the Cabela's Credit Card Worthwhile
To make the Cabela's Credit Card worthwhile, you should pay your bill in full by the due date each month. This will prevent you from accruing any interest at the card’s expensive 20.49% - 32.24% (V) APR, which could outweigh the value of your rewards.
Since the card has a $0 annual fee, you don’t have to spend a certain amount of money each year to break even. But you’ll get the most value out of the card if you’re a big spender who can qualify for the ongoing bonus rewards rates.
Cabela's Credit Card Highlights
- Up To $50 In Initial Bonuses: For starters, you will receive $20 in “CLUB Points” toward a purchase made the day that you apply for and are approved for the Cabela’s Visa. If you make at least five non-Cabela’s purchases, you will get $20 worth of points, plus an additional $10 after making two Bass Pro or Cabela’s purchases. The second and third bonus will be credited to your account within 30 days of your last qualifying purchase made in the first 30 days after approval.
- 2%+ Back At Cabela’s & Bass Pro: You’ll earn rewards in terms of points, but the amount that you receive will equate to 2% cash back on Cabela’s and Bass Pro purchases and 1% cash back everywhere else. Although these earnings aren’t quite as good as cash, considering they can only pay for purchases with Cabela’s or Bass Pro, that should be just fine with anyone interested in a Cabela's Credit Card. Plus, you may have the opportunity to earn extra points by spending more, if you also meet an undisclosed creditworthiness requirement. Spending $10,000 annually can raise your earning rate to the equivalent of 3% back, and spending $25,000 will bring it up to 5%.
- No Annual Fee: It’s always better to pay nothing than something, and in this case, you’re saving about $22.29 compared to the average credit card. Not bad.
- 0% Foreign-Transaction Fee: The great outdoors aren’t restricted to the U.S. and you’ll not be penalized with a surcharge if your excursions take you abroad. In fact, it will not apply even if you make purchases from internationally located merchants while you’re physically in the U.S. The lack of foreign fee assessed by the Cabela’s Card is actually below average. But there are other no-foreign-transaction-fee offers to consider too.
Cabela's Credit Card Lowlights
- Largely Unappealing Financing: Many credit cards offer 0% introductory rates for purchases and/or balance transfers. Not the Cabela’s Visa, though. It just has a regular APR that can be as high as 32.24% (V) for non-Cabela's purchases and a 32.24% (V) rate for cash advances. The average APR for a “good credit” credit card is 24.12%. With that being said, Cabela’s purchases will accrue interest at a rate of just 9.99%, which is well below the 18.04% average for “excellent credit” credit cards. It’s still not cheap, though, so financing should be avoided if at all possible.
Other Things to Consider About the Cabela's Credit Card
- Points Don’t Expire: You shouldn’t feel any undue urgency to use your rewards within a certain period of time, as CLUB Points don’t expire by date. The only reason they’ll be taken from you is if your account falls out of good standing, which usually happens because of missed payments.
- No Penalty APR Or Overlimit Fee: This is a courtesy that you should strive to avoid ever needing. The lack of a penalty fee will keep your new-purchase interest rate from rising due to minor infractions as well as the cost of existing debt from increasing if you become 60 or more days delinquent. The card’s similar lack of overlimit fees only comes into play if you actively opt in for the ability to make a purchase that would exceed your available credit. As long as you don’t opt in, no credit card will charge an overlimit fee.
- $0 Balance-Transfer Fee: If the lack of a 0% promo rate and a regular balance-transfer APR as high as 32.24% (V) didn’t already scare you off and you are still considering a balance transfer, you should know that there is no transfer fee.
- Access To Special Offers & Events: All cardholders are eligible for “exclusive offers” on Cabela’s gear. Cabela’s credit-card users who spend enough to qualify for Silver or Black status also get access to “Signature Events” and “The Experience.” The events are basically preplanned, all-inclusive hunting and fishing vacations. “The Experience” is similar, offering behind-the-scenes access to inner workings of hunting, fishing and outdoors companies, including Ruger, Simms and Zeiss. All such trips seem to cost at least $2,000 per person.
- You Earn Cabela’s Rewards Even Without the Card: You don’t even need a Cabela's Credit Card to get 2% back. Simply signing up for Cabela’s free Outdoor Rewards program enables you to earn at that rate no matter how you pay. While the Silver and Black versions of the Cabela’s card give higher earning rates if you meet the spending and credit requirements, they’re still not fantastic. It’s common for store credit cards to offer 5% back on store purchases with no spending requirements, so in comparison this offer is lackluster.

By using a consistent methodology to evaluate the Cabela's Credit Card and all other cards, WalletHub’s credit card experts make it easy for people to compare their options and find the best credit cards for their needs.
The WalletHub rating system uses 16 key metrics grouped into seven categories: Fees, Rewards, Two-year Cost, Interest Rates, Approval Requirements, Special Features, and Reviews. Each metric has a maximum number of points allocated to it, based on the metric’s importance as determined by our editors.
