2015 Credit Card Landscape Report

2015 Credit Card Landscape Not only do credit card offers regularly fluctuate in value, corresponding to changes in the economic climate or issuer strategy, but credit card market trends are also extremely revealing about the health of the country’s economy and that of its consumers. Keeping track of this information is therefore essential to finding the best deals and truly understanding the financial climate.

CardHub aims to provide the requisite insights by monitoring market data regarding interest rates, rewards and fees across credit segments and highlighting the most important trends in our quarterly credit card landscape reports. Below you can check out our latest findings, including a breakdown of how credit card interest rates have reacted to the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise its target rate.

Q4 Main Findings

Interest Rates

  • The average regular APR for new credit card offers increased by 22 basis points during the fourth quarter, which essentially mirrors the 25-point hike the Federal Reserve announced for its target rate in mid-December.
  • The Federal Reserve’s announced interest rate increase will collectively cost consumers around $1.3 billion in additional credit card debt payments over the next year.
  • Two segments of the credit card market bucked the trend of interest rates rising on a year-over-year basis during the fourth quarter: excellent-credit credit cards and secured credit cards. Falling rates in the excellent credit segment reflect continued competition for customers who have proven themselves trustworthy in an uncertain market. And declines in secured card rates are a function of issuers not bearing any cost of funds for such products.

Initial Perks (0% APRs & Rewards Bonuses)

  • After two years of 0% balance transfer offers gradually becoming more generous while 0% offers for new purchases worsened slightly, introductory financing terms appeared to have stabilized at the end of 2015. Interest-free introductory terms are now 16% longer for balance transfers than new purchases, reinforcing CardHub’s hypothesis that issuers are more intent on attracting the balances of consumers already mired in debt than incentivizing people to incur new debt in a recovering, yet uncertain economy.
  • While credit card rewards largely appear to have stabilized in recent quarters, the value of initial rewards bonuses offered in the form of points or miles increased 5.36% during Q4 2015 relative to the previous quarter. Such bonuses have more than doubled in value since Q3 2010.

Fees

  • Credit card companies continue to exploit the weakness of cash-hungry customers, increasing cash advance fees by roughly 64% since the end of 2012. The average cash advance fee is now the greater of 4.02% or $14.51.
  • The average annual fee fell by 5.33% during Q4, and is now $16.51. It seems that credit card annual fees reached a short-term peak during the second quarter of 2015 and are now headed back down to 2013 levels.
  • Foreign transaction fees continued to drop during the fourth quarter, falling 1.84% from the previous quarter and 8.19% relative to the fourth quarter of 2014. The average foreign transaction fee has now declined by 15% since the beginning of 2011.

Complaints & Satisfaction

  • Consumer complaints declined from Q3 to Q4 in all categories except “rewards,” which indicates that while overall consumer satisfaction is improving, consumers may have experienced issues redeeming their points and miles during the holiday season.
  • Complaints pertaining to “fees” and “credit” declined the most from Q3 to Q4, falling by 41.53% and 37.15%, respectively. The decline in fee-related complaints is especially interesting because while annual fees and foreign transaction fees fell during the fourth quarter, balance transfer fees and cash advance fees actually increased. Late fees held steady during Q4, but were still 3.43% higher than in Q4 2014.
  • Despite declining by 24.78% from Q3 to Q4, and 22.5% year over year, complaints regarding the billing process still represent the majority of those levied against credit card issuers by a wide margin.
  • Synchrony Bank had the lowest consumer satisfaction in Q4 2015, with a CardHub Satisfaction Score of 68.66. Navy Federal Credit Union had the highest Satisfaction Score: 96.40.
