Best Cash Back Credit Cards

Last update: Jul 24, 2015

best credit card deals Cash back credit cards make for a great addition to anyone’s wallet because they provide a straightforward earning and redemption mechanism in a currency that cannot be devalued by a credit card company. The best cash back credit cards tend to be those that keep things simple by providing attractive earning rates across all purchases. We tend to avoid cards offering higher earning rates in rotating spending categories, as they require quarterly sign-up, are difficult to plan for, and are often not for the types of purchases that people make most often.

In addition, the best cards either do not charge annual fees or provide rewards that are easily lucrative enough to cover the fixed costs. CardHub’s editors identified their favorite offers by comparing more than 1,000 cards, based on how well they fit the aforementioned characteristics. While advertising status played no role in our selection of these cards, certain sponsored offers may be included.

EXPERT’S ANSWERS

Why get the best cash back credit card and not the best travel rewards credit card?

By: Odysseas Papadimitriou, CardHub CEOIn a word, flexibility. Though certain travel rewards credit cards might be more lucrative, the best cash back rewards credit cards simplify redemption and broaden rather than limit the possible uses of your earnings. In addition, cash back credit cards represent a lower risk because credit card companies cannot devalue what you have already earned, as they can with rewards miles or points. Whether you don't travel enough to warrant getting a travel rewards credit card or you merely value the simplicity of cash rewards, you can't go wrong with the best cash back card.

How often do the best cash back credit cards change?

By: John Kiernan, Personal Finance EditorThe best cash back credit cards page changes whenever new deals that warrant inclusion are introduced. There is no specific timetable for this as credit card companies alter offers at their own discretion based on various economic trends. As a result, the best cash back credit cards for 2011 will likely differ from those for 2010.

Do the best cash back credit cards make rewards redemption easier?

By: Debra Wei, Personal Finance ReporterRewards redemption is very simple with all cash back credit cards. You earn rewards in terms of cash, which you receive in the form of checks or statement credits. There are no blackout dates, no risk of devaluation, no loopholes, no point benchmarks to reach, just a clear cash earning rate. The best cash back cards simply heighten the benefits provided by your typical cash back credit card.

The Capital One Credit Card has become one of my favorite credit cards to use through my day to day activities. The most notable feature about the card that I like is the fact that I get 1.5% cash back on every purchase I make regardless of the category. Other cards offer varied rewards based on how you use the card, but the base 1.5% for everything is a killer deal!

This capital one credit card has easily become one of my most often used credit cards when it comes to everyday purchases. The biggest draw of the card for most (myself included) is the fact that you get 1.5% cash back on every single purchase you make. This makes this card fantastic for those who make daily transactions at convenience stores and whatnot, as other cards only offer the measly 1% cash back that no one really cares about.

The Citi Double Cash Card is the only card that I know of at this time that not only provides rewards for using the card for purchases, but also rewards customers for paying on their account each month. You don't even have to pay the full balance in order to take advantage of the extra 1% rewards! Citi's customer service isn't the best in the credit card industry but they're improving. I would suggest this card especially to people looking to build their credit history, because as you make payments, you're rewarded for it. This card would be better if it offered extra percentage cash back for certain purchases at certain times of the year, but it's really hard to complain about getting rewarded just to make payments on my credit card - something I'm basically required to do anyway.

As a student I love using the "Journey Student Rewards" from Capitol One. I have limited history with credit and having the ability to earn cash-back on all of my purchases is a very nice to have. It gives you base cash-back of 1% on all purchases with up to 1.25% on qualifying purchases. The best part about the card is that there is no fee associated with having the card making it all the better for students to take advantage of.

The best cash-back credit card I've found is from PNC Bank. Their "Cash Builder" credit card is really easy to use and gives 1.25% (or more) cash reward on qualifying purchases. In addition, the card gives more rewards because I am a customer of PNC and have a checking account with a qualifying balance level. There is no annual fee for the card, so that also makes its use very simple.

The Credit One Bank Credit Card with Gas Rewards is what I use to fuel up every time I need to. I'm going to pay for the gas whether its with the card or cash so why not pay with the card and get 1% cash back on my purchase.

I would say that the Quicksilver card is my favorite credit card. I have credit cards with Chase, Bank of America as well, but with Quicksilver you get 1.5% for all purchases which is great. It's hard to plan your purchases according to the revolving categories that are available for each quarter. You also get a bonus for signing up, and no annual fee.

I think the (relatively) new Discover IT card is one of the best cash-back cards available. You earn points at sometimes a surprising rate, and if you have your card saved on Amazon, the points sync automatically and are right there at your fingertips. During checkout, it will automatically ask you if you want to use them, and if so, how many. It's really convenient. They also have a new feature where you can freeze or unfreeze your card at the touch of a button with the Discover app. This is good for situations when you panic and can't find your card, you can automatically freeze it without so much as a phone call, then when you find it in your laundry hamper or something you can just reactivate it yourself without having to make another sheepish call to Discover.

Personally, I think the amazon visa card is the best. I mostly shop on amazon and if you do too it'll work well. It has great rewards if you shot through amazon and is lucrative for me.

I would say my favorite credit card is the Capital One Quicksilver. The $100 bonus for spending $500 upfront was a really nice perk, being that I was already planning on a purchase of a new computer at the time. The cashback rewards are fantastic, and without an annual fee and paperless billing, you can pretty much forget it's there until you need it again.

The best credit card for me is the Freedom Card of Chase Bank. This card has the best reward program I know. You can earn 5% cash back en purchases, and each quarter you can enjoy new bonus categories like gas station, restaurants or department stores like Amazon. I like use my Amazon account to buy Christmas gifts. Getting the cash back really helps my holiday budget. I can use my cash back for reduce my payments too.
This card doesn’t have annual fee, and always the balances transfer is just 3% of the amount you want to transfer, all other card is always 5%.
They have great offers when you apply for first time as 0$ APR for 15 months, a bonus of $100 when you spend $500 in the first 3 months and o$ APR on balance transfer for 15 months too.
I use my Chase Visa very often, especially when buying things on sale...as a result, I get points for these purchases...For example, I just purchased a Smartphone Galaxy 4s, and charged over $500 to my Chase Visa. So I accumulated a lot of points. I use it whenever I can.

The Citi Double Cash Card has been my favorite credit card for awhile now. You earn 1.5% cash back on all purchases, and and instant $100 bonus when you spend $500. Customer service for the card has always been stellar and they let me know if there is any suspicious activity associated with my account. However the best part of having the card is that the cash back rewards never expire which is good if your saving up for vacation or a expensive purchase.

I recently started using the Discover IT card, and couldn't be happier about the cash-back options! With some of my other cards, I have to wait until I make a payment until the corresponding rewards points are available. With the IT card, after a few days, the cash back rewards are available, even before the card is paid. In other words, I can use cash back to pay off the original purchase balance. Also, I really like the "activated" rewards that give 5% cash back during certain times of the year - each quarter has a different set of rewards; dining, gas, and flights are just a few examples of increased rewards points.

I have been using the Chase Freedom card for almost 3 years now. I have not yet had a single issue with it at all. 1% cash back on all purchases and then up to 5% on qualified purchases. Yes, revolving categories can be a pain, but the categories always seem to fit my needs, whether it be gas, groceries, or Amazon.com. Little known fact about Chase cards. They sync with Amazon.com so you can spend your points there too with the click of a button. So easy to use.

The Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card has been a great card for me. The initial $100 bonus is awesome, and then then you are able to earn 1.5% cash back. The 1.5% is not the highest, but it has a base pay percent higher than most other credit cards and this is great for every day purchasing. Plus no annual fees!
