Best Cash Back Credit Cards

Last update: Mar 30, 2015

best credit card deals Cash back credit cards make for a great addition to anyone’s wallet because they provide a straightforward earning and redemption mechanism in a currency that cannot be devalued by a credit card company. The best cash back credit cards tend to be those that keep things simple by providing attractive earning rates across all purchases. We tend to avoid cards offering higher earning rates in rotating spending categories, as they require quarterly sign-up, are difficult to plan for, and are often not for the types of purchases that people make most often.

In addition, the best cards either do not charge annual fees or provide rewards that are easily lucrative enough to cover the fixed costs. CardHub’s editors identified their favorite offers by comparing more than 1,000 cards, irrespective of advertising status, based on how well they fit the aforementioned characteristics.

EXPERT’S ANSWERS

Why get the best cash back credit card and not the best travel rewards credit card?

By: Odysseas Papadimitriou, CardHub CEOIn a word, flexibility. Though certain travel rewards credit cards might be more lucrative, the best cash back rewards credit cards simplify redemption and broaden rather than limit the possible uses of your earnings. In addition, cash back credit cards represent a lower risk because credit card companies cannot devalue what you have already earned, as they can with rewards miles or points. Whether you don't travel enough to warrant getting a travel rewards credit card or you merely value the simplicity of cash rewards, you can't go wrong with the best cash back card.

How often do the best cash back credit cards change?

By: John Kiernan, Personal Finance EditorThe best cash back credit cards page changes whenever new deals that warrant inclusion are introduced. There is no specific timetable for this as credit card companies alter offers at their own discretion based on various economic trends. As a result, the best cash back credit cards for 2011 will likely differ from those for 2010.

Do the best cash back credit cards make rewards redemption easier?

By: Debra Wei, Personal Finance ReporterRewards redemption is very simple with all cash back credit cards. You earn rewards in terms of cash, which you receive in the form of checks or statement credits. There are no blackout dates, no risk of devaluation, no loopholes, no point benchmarks to reach, just a clear cash earning rate. The best cash back cards simply heighten the benefits provided by your typical cash back credit card.

I recently started using the Discover IT card, and couldn't be happier about the cash-back options! With some of my other cards, I have to wait until I make a payment until the corresponding rewards points are available. With the IT card, after a few days, the cash back rewards are available, even before the card is paid. In other words, I can use cash back to pay off the original purchase balance. Also, I really like the "activated" rewards that give 5% cash back during certain times of the year - each quarter has a different set of rewards; dining, gas, and flights are just a few examples of increased rewards points.

I have been using the Chase Freedom card for almost 3 years now. I have not yet had a single issue with it at all. 1% cash back on all purchases and then up to 5% on qualified purchases. Yes, revolving categories can be a pain, but the categories always seem to fit my needs, whether it be gas, groceries, or Amazon.com. Little known fact about Chase cards. They sync with Amazon.com so you can spend your points there too with the click of a button. So easy to use.

The Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card has been a great card for me. The initial $100 bonus is awesome, and then then you are able to earn 1.5% cash back. The 1.5% is not the highest, but it has a base pay percent higher than most other credit cards and this is great for every day purchasing. Plus no annual fees!

I personally like the CapitalOne Visa card. They keep it simple with 2 points per dollar on everything, also their rewards are very generous. They offer many different types of rewards, such as amazon gift cards, as well as gift cards for other companies. This makes them, in my opinion the best card out there that is available to most people.

I personally like the Bank Americard from Bank of America. They keep it simple with 1% on everything, 2% on groceries, and 3% on gas. Groceries and gas likely take up a large percentage of what people spend, so you're bound to get some good cash back that way. And they also on occasion offer other bonus categories like restaurants or movie theaters. And if you have a Bank of America checking account, you can get an extra 10% when you deposit your cash back there. Overall a very good card.

THE Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card is a great credit card. You will get 1.5% cash back and cash back on purchases. And the fees for the card is 35.00 dollar. This credit card is good for people who have good credit. And your cash back money does not expire.

The Best cash back credit card I ever had is probably the Discover It card. It has generous cash back categories that rotate every 3 months. The best part is probably the October to December category, which has always been for holiday shopping. Every year those 3 months alone I probably save over a hundred dollars. In addition, they got great cash backs available when you shop online through its referral links. This is the one card I keep using for my everyday purchase. Over the years I have used my cash back to pay off my balance and even get gift cards. In some stores I was able to get a 20% discount on gift cards.

I think Capital One Quick Silver is good for a first credit card. First i would like to state that i am very satisfied with my capital one quick silver card. I honestly use my card on a daily basis, its nice because they offer a 1.5% cash back on all items purchased. Another thing that i liked very much about capital one is that every 6 months they will evaluate your payment history, and if you have a clean payment history they will give you a credit increase. Overall i am a very satisfied custom with capital one! If you are someone who is not familiar with capital one yet i would suggest reading some of the previous comments below, i think the card speaks for itself!

The BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ for Students Credit Card works well when you are young and don't have a big salary job yet. It's a nice and easy way to build up your credit at a young age, without having the annual fees and the big purchases. This is a credit card to use when you are making purchases on groceries or everyday things, that you intend on paying back right away! Instead of using a debit card, use this credit card, and then pay it back at the end of the month.

Even the people working at BofA would not recommend that you make big purchases that you cannot pay off at the end of the month. This is a credit card that you get to build up your credit, so that eventually you can apply for better credit cards once out of school. This is a good starter-off credit card for first time credit card holders. Also, it is a good credit card to get if you already or plan on having a BofA checking and savings account, as well, because you earn more cash back. There is no annual fee, which is good for younger people, and there are no spending requirements.

The Chase Freedom card is my favorite cash back card. I use this as my everyday card for purchases on everything, whether it be clothes, dinners out, gas, or groceries. Since it's 5% cash back, you end up earning pretty quickly. I was surprised at how quickly I had a good amount of cash back. I can use that money to pay off more of my credit card or get gift cards to various retailers. I’ve used other types of rewards cards like flight and hotel ones, but cash is still my favorite. Overall, I’d highly recommend this card for anyone looking to earn rewards without spending high amounts on interest rates or annual fees.

It’s hard to top the BankAmericard Cash Rewards Credit Card for students. I was still a student back then and it was my first-ever credit card. Back then, I was so hesitant about applying for credit cards, because for one, I didn’t need it, and another thing is I hate everything I hear about maxing out and being buried in card debt. The only reason why I applied for this (with a sales person who visited the store I worked in) is because I was told that I could get $100 cash back just for opening up an account and spending $500 within the first few billing cycles. Well who wouldn’t love another extra Benjamin right? So I took it and have been using it ever since. I particularly love the gas rewards (3%) because I work much farther now and I travel for a total of 2 hours every day. I also love how I can still gain at least 1% for every other type of purchase. At my spending rate, I am able to save $25 every three months. It may not sound a lot, but it’s better than nothing. Plus, the minimum payments and the overall APR are not too bad as well. I just have to be a responsible borrower of course. All-in-all, great cash back card!

I recommend the Citi Double Cash Card, because it has got the highest cash back rate of any reward card out right now. You get a total of 2% back, 1% on every purchase you make, and another 1% when you pay it off. They have wonderful customer service, and they are very informative and prompt whenever I call with a question. The card also has the new security chip in it, which makes me feel even more secure when I use it. Citi is on top of their game with this card. Highly recommended for anyone that wants to make the most out of their rewards on money you are spending anyway.

I recently received an offer for the American Express Blue Cash Everyday Card. At first the offer seemed too good to be true, but I applied and received my card quickly. What attracted me to the card was the offer to get $200 cash back as long as you put $1000 on the card within the first three months. The offer also included a free year of Amazon Prime which is worth another $100. Since I use another cash back credit card regularly for bills and groceries I knew it wouldn't take long to put $1000 on the card. Within a couple days of doing so, I received the $200 statement credit and the code for my free year of Amazon Prime. I feel like this was an amazing offer, however the benefits don't stop there. There is no annual fee, and it has a zero percent APR for the first 15 months. You get 3% cash back at grocery stores, 2% cash back at gas stations, 2% at select department stores, and 1% on other purchases. I don't really see what's not to love here. This is my new favorite credit card.

I like the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card the most. I really love the fact that you are able to earn $100 extra bonus cash within the first three months if you spend a minimum of $500. Most people spend this easily in three months especially if you have kids, or you pay many of your bills via the card. It is also very neat that you earn 1.5% cash back on all purchases, most cards don't allow you to gain cash-back on all purchases and require special stores or restaurants to be shopped at. This is the best card on this page due to its numerous features and the inclusion of the 1.5% cash-back promise on any purchase. This feature alone makes having the card worth it.

My favorite is the BankAmericard Cash Rewards card for students. The bonus is really nice because not a lot of card deals include that offer and it is really helpful for college students who are always in need of extra cash! It is easy to meet the $500 requirement just by buying textbooks, for example. The rest of the card package is not particularly flashy but it is just as good as most other cards, and the fact that this card is designed for people for almost no credit history makes it a perfect choice for someone just starting out. That's why I chose this card.
