I can't believe how difficult it is for a Canadian to pay up his/her Brooks Brothers account! You have to be able to write a cheque from a U.S. bank...and how many of us have that! Advice: Canadians, do NOT get a Brooks Brothers card, ever!
Ok, Christmas is coming up and for many people that means figuring out how to make our money go as far as possible. One common way to do so is opening a store card or a credit card affiliated with a certain retailer in order to get extra savings on purchases you are likely to make anyway. If you or someone you plan on giving gifts to likes Brooks Brothers, you may come across this Brooks Brothers Credit Card, and the question you will inevitably ask is whether it is worth applying for. The Brooks Brothers Credit Card is offered by GE Money and requires good to excellent credit for approval. So if you don’t have at least good credit you can forget about getting it, at least for the moment. If you have upper echelon credit history, you need to determine how the Brooks Brothers Credit Card’s rewards stack up against other cards on the market. This card gets you 15% off on your first Brooks Brothers purchase, 4 points for every dollar you spend at Brooks Bros. and1 point for every dollar spent elsewhere. Since Brooks Brothers rewards points automatically translate into a $20 gift card when you compile 20,000 of them, at best, you get $20 for every $5,000 you spend at the store. I know prices are high at Brooks Brothers, but that’s really not much bang for your buck. Let’s say you decide to take advantage of the store’s 2 suits for $1599 deal this Christmas, you’ll save almost $240 and will need to spend about $3400 more to get an additional $20 off. $240 and change is nothing to sneeze at, but the truth is that you can do better than what the Brooks Brothers GE Money Credit Card offers. If you decide to apply for the Chase Saphirre Preferred Credit card for instance, you get a $500 cash initial bonus after spending $3,000 in the first three months. You’d easily be able to meet this threshold if you buy a couple suits at Brooks Bros. for the holidays and would then have more money to replenish your bank account than the Brooks Brothers Credit Card would provide, you’d just have to wait a bit longer to get it. So my advice is to pass on the Brooks Brothers Credit Card because, ironically enough, a different credit card could help save you more on Brooks Brothers purchases.
