Even though this offer seems like its changed a lot over the years, Id still get it if I didn’t care how my credit score was over the next few months. I mean, I’m all for a free roundtrip Southwest Airlines flight. With that being said though, the Southwest Airlines Credit Card may not be the best offer of its kind on the market right now and if you just want to open one credit card right now, it might not be for you as a result. Why don’t we find out with a little pro and con. Pros - Free flight: I don’t want to give anything away, but I kind of think this is the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card’s only strength. Cons - Ongoing rewards: 2 miles per dollar with Southwest and 1 per dollar everythere else isn’t too good especially since travel cards give you 2 miles on every purchase. - Balance Transfer Offer: The Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Card doesn’t have a 0% intro rate but has a balance transfer fee, so the one point per dollar it gives you on transfers isn’t worth it. Youd be better off using the No Fee Slate Card. - Purchase APR: No 0% rate here either. Its clear thatn the only only reason youd use the SouthWest Rapid Rewards Credit Card is for its initial bonus, and if you want to do that go for it. I wouldn’t do it in lieu of getting a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred cause that offers $500 in travel,
Umm to the poster that claimed 30k points a year and 2 free flights- to my knowledge it is 3000 points per year and as of right now 25000 point signing bonus which equals a little more than $400 worth of Want to Get Away tickets- so you could get 2 $200 roundtrip flights if you can find em...
The offer has changed a lot over the past few months, which will explain the discrepancy. Toward the end of last year the Southwest card offered $800 in Want to Get Away tickets.
I feel bad for anyone who doesn’t know about this offer. In case you didn’t catch it above (I don’t know how that’s possible, but people have short attention spans these days), by opening the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card and making A SINGLE PURCHASE you get TWO FREE FLIGHTS! While only Southwest Airlines frequent flyers would care about the ongoing rewards this card offers (1-2 points per $1 spent and 30,000 bonus points each year), anyone can benefit from such a great initial bonus. There doesn’t seem to be a catch either, for all of those cynics out there. Yeah, the free flights you get aren’t going to be first class (they are Want to Get Away fares, I believe), I don’t think anyone would feel too bad for you flying coach for free. I’ve flown Southwest before and it’s pretty nice, and while you probably want to book Want to Get Away Flights as far in advance as possible, they’re usually available as close as a couple of days before take off. The only word of caution I would give consumers interested in taking advantage of this Southwest Airlines credit card deal is that you MUST have at least good credit (FICO score of at least 660) and you should not open a new credit card if you have applied for more than a few in the past couple months—this can damage your credit score. If neither thing is a concern, don’t even wait to get the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card!
