Card Categories

  • A credit card for yourself -- select 'Personal'
  • A credit card for your business -- select 'Small Business'
    • You must be the owner or principal of the business AND
    • You must be able to provide a Tax ID Number (TIN) or Employer ID Number (EIN)
With both a Secured and an Unsecured credit card you build up your credit in the same way. Therefore,
  • If you can afford to place a security deposit of $200 or more then we strongly recommend that you select 'Secured', since Secured credit cards have lower fees than the Unsecured credit cards.
  • If you can NOT afford to place a security deposit of $200 then select 'Unsecured', but first make sure that you are comfortable with the fees associated with Unsecured credit cards.
  • If you are a College Student, select 'College Student'.
  • If you NOT a College Student and have less than 3 years of credit history under your name, select 'Other'.
For example, if you are new to the country, or recently divorced and all the loans were under your spouses name then you most likely fit under the 'Other' category.

Things I Care About

We strongly recommend that you only select 1 or 2 of these 4 options. Most credit cards are not good in combining all 4 of these features.
  • Intro Rate on Purchases: For the first few months, some cards offer a 0% Introductory APR/Rate on your purchases.
  • Intro Rate on Balance Transfers: Some cards offer a 0% or a Very Low Introductory APR/Rate on any balances that you transfer from another credit card.
  • Regular Rate: After the Introductory Period is over (if any) this is the Interest Rate that will be charged on BOTH your Purchase and Transferred balances.
    • By checking this option you will have an opportunity to filter out cards that have a Regular Rate above your threshold.
  • Rewards: If you make a lot of purchases every month you can get significant benefits -- like cash back, hotel points, airline miles, etc.
    • We recommend that you get a Cash Back credit card since the benefits that you will get will be the most transparent.

Networks

We recommend that you at least have a VISA or a MasterCard in your wallet since they are the most commonly accepted cards.
If you do, then you should keep all 4 checkboxes checked.

Credit Card Networks determine where your credit card is accepted. These days most stores, businesses, etc. accept all 4 of them (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover), but there are definitely exceptions.

If you would like to select specific credit card companies, click on the 'Companies' filter (below).
Credit Card Networks determine where your credit card is accepted. These days most retail stores, businesses, etc. accept BOTH Visa and MasterCard.
Therefore, we recommend that you keep BOTH checkboxes checked.

expand Help with Annual Fee

Annual Fee

Unless you have Excellent or Good Credit, we recommend that you do not eliminate the cards that have an Annual Fee because you will significantly limit your choices.

Paying an annual fee is not always a bad thing; sometimes the credit cards with annual fees offer higher rewards and lower interest rates.

Note: In order to make comparisons easier, when a card has a monthly fee we multiply that monthly fee by 12 and show it as an annual fee.
