5 Tips for Finding & Using Gas Credit Cards for Bad Credit
- Pay attention to the fees.
Some gasoline credit cards for bad credit are very expensive, and the cost can offset your savings from rewards.
- Consider secured cards.
Secured cards often have more favorable terms, and may be easier to qualify for, than unsecured gasoline credit cards for bad credit. While you will have to put up a security deposit, that deposit is fully refundable when you close the card with no balance or graduate to an unsecured card. In addition, rewards on secured cards are typically as good as (or even better than) rewards on unsecured cards for bad credit.
- Prioritize gas spending.
Your card may have a spending cap for bonus rewards that’s shared between gas and other categories. In addition, with bad credit, your card likely won’t have a high credit limit. Therefore, you may want to use the card primarily for gas.
- Don’t rule out flat-rate cash back rewards.
If you plan to use your card for more than just gas, a card that offers a flat cash back rate on all purchases can sometimes be more lucrative than a card that just offers bonus rewards on gas and a low rewards rate on everything else.
- Continue to improve your credit.
By using your card responsibly and always paying your monthly bill on time (and paying the full balance if possible), you will gradually improve your credit score to the point where you will be able to qualify for better gas credit cards.
Methodology for Selecting the Best Gas Credit Cards for Bad Credit
To identify the best gas credit cards for bad credit, WalletHub’s editors compare 1,500+ credit card offers on a regular basis. After narrowing down the field to cards that are available to people with bad credit, we compare those offers based on their rewards earning rates on gas and other purchases, along with their bonuses, fees, APRs and secondary benefits.
This enables us to pinpoint the cards that are likely to save consumers the most money. In addition, we make sure to select offers suitable for different types of applicants, like those looking for low fees, high rewards rates or the lack of a security deposit.
